goes viral

Goes viral describes content—a video, image, post, or story—that spreads rapidly across the internet through sharing, achieving massive exposure in a short time.

The metaphor compares information spread to how viruses replicate and transmit from host to host: Her tweet went viral overnight, That cat video is going viral.

Something can go viral intentionally through marketing or accidentally through sheer appeal.
