glass negatives
Old photo plates
Glass negatives are photographic negatives made on glass plates rather than film.
Used from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s, they preceded flexible film and produce exceptionally sharp, detailed images.
The glass substrate kept the light-sensitive emulsion perfectly flat.
Many historical photographs survive only as glass negatives: The archive contains thousands of glass negatives from the Civil War era.
