gingering

Spicing things up

Gingering is the practice of applying an irritant—traditionally ginger root—to a horse's anus or vulva to make it carry its tail high and step more animatedly.

The technique, considered abusive, has been used to enhance appearance in show horses: The horse's unnaturally high tail carriage suggested gingering.

The term also covers any act of adding ginger to food or drink, or figuratively, adding zest or energy to something.
