ghost in the machine
Mind within matter
Ghost in the machine is a phrase for the supposed mind or consciousness residing in the physical body—the idea that a nonmaterial self inhabits our mechanical flesh.
The philosopher Gilbert Ryle coined it mockingly to criticize mind-body dualism.
It now appears more broadly for any seeming intelligence or will within a system: There's a ghost in the machine causing these glitches.
