frozen ropes
Hard-hit line drives
Frozen ropes are hard-hit line drives in baseball—balls struck so forcefully they travel in a straight trajectory without arc, as if the rope of their path were rigid rather than sagging.
The term emphasizes the flatness and velocity of the hit: He lined a frozen rope into the gap.
Occasionally used in other sports for similarly flat, powerful shots.
