frost nip
Pre-frostbite skin damage
Frost nip is mild cold injury to the skin, the early stage before frostbite sets in.
The affected area—usually ears, nose, fingers, or toes—becomes pale and numb but hasn't yet frozen.
Unlike frostbite, frost nip causes no permanent damage and resolves with gentle rewarming: Her cheeks showed signs of frost nip after the ski run.
