frost crack

Winter bark split

A frost crack is a vertical split in a tree trunk caused by extreme cold.

When temperatures drop rapidly, the outer wood contracts faster than the inner wood, creating tension that can rupture the bark and underlying tissue with an audible pop.

These wounds typically appear on the south or southwest side of trees and may reopen in subsequent winters: The old maple bore frost cracks from decades of harsh winters.
