frontbenches

Senior parliamentary seats

Frontbenches are the seats in the British Parliament and similar legislative bodies reserved for government ministers and opposition leaders—those holding or shadowing official positions.

The term contrasts with backbenches, where ordinary members sit.

By extension, frontbenches refers collectively to the senior politicians who occupy those seats: The frontbenches clashed over the budget proposal.
