free paper
No-cost newspaper
A free paper is a newspaper distributed without charge, typically supported by advertising revenue rather than subscriptions or newsstand sales.
These range from community weeklies to alternative papers covering local arts and politics: I grabbed a free paper from the rack outside the coffee shop.
The term sometimes carries connotations of lower journalistic standards, though many free papers produce serious reporting.
