four-stroke cycle
Intake-compression-power-exhaust pattern
The four-stroke cycle is the operating sequence of most internal combustion engines: intake, compression, power, and exhaust—each stroke being one movement of the piston.
Air and fuel enter, get compressed, ignite to drive the piston down, then exit as exhaust.
Also called the Otto cycle after its inventor.
Most car engines run on the four-stroke cycle.
