lead off
Open the proceedings
Lead off means to begin or start something, especially as the first in a sequence: She led off the meeting with a brief announcement.
In baseball, to lead off is to bat first in the lineup or an inning; a leadoff hitter occupies that position.
The phrase can also mean to take a preliminary step away from a base before the pitch.
