foolproofing

Making mistakes impossible

Foolproofing is the practice of designing systems, products, or processes so they cannot easily be misused or broken through error.

The goal is to anticipate mistakes and build in safeguards: The engineers spent months foolproofing the interface.

In manufacturing, foolproofing mechanisms prevent assembly errors—a part that only fits one way, a machine that won't start without proper setup.

The Japanese term *poka-yoke* describes this same principle.
