first serve
Opening tennis toss
In tennis and similar racket sports, the first serve is a player's initial attempt to put the ball in play at the start of a point.
Players typically hit their first serve with more power or spin, accepting greater risk because a fault allows a second attempt: Her first serve percentage dropped in the final set.
If the first serve lands out or hits the net, the player gets another try.
