firkins

Quarter-keg containers

Firkins is the plural of firkin, a small wooden cask or barrel traditionally used for storing butter, lard, or ale.

The term also refers to a unit of capacity—typically nine gallons for ale or fifty-six pounds for butter.

The word survives mainly in brewing contexts, where a firkin holds a quarter of a standard barrel: The pub ordered three firkins of cask ale.
