fire shelters
Wildfire survival cocoons
Fire shelters are portable, tent-like structures that wildland firefighters carry as last-resort protection when escape from an advancing fire becomes impossible.
Made of reflective aluminum and silica, they deflect radiant heat while creating a small pocket of breathable air.
Firefighters deploy them by lying face-down and pulling the shelter over themselves: We practiced deploying our fire shelters in under twenty seconds.
