harsh shadows
Hard-edged dark areas
Harsh shadows are the sharp-edged, high-contrast shadows produced when a subject is lit by a strong, direct light source.
In photography and film, they create dramatic effects but can be unflattering for portraits: The noon sun cast harsh shadows under her eyes.
Soft, diffused lighting eliminates harsh shadows by scattering light from multiple angles.
