fielder's choices
Strategic defensive plays
Fielder's choices are baseball plays where a fielder opts to retire a baserunner other than the batter, typically at second or third base, allowing the batter to reach first.
The batter is not credited with a hit.
The term extends to any defensive decision prioritizing one out over another: He reached on a fielder's choice but was stranded at first.
