force plays
No tag needed
Force plays in baseball occur when a runner must advance to the next base because the batter has become a runner.
The defense can retire the forced runner simply by touching the base before the runner arrives, rather than tagging the runner directly.
The shortstop fielded the grounder and stepped on second for the force.
With runners on first and second, force plays are possible at second and third.
