fault zone
Earthquake-prone area
A fault zone is a region of fractured rock where tectonic plates meet and movement occurs along multiple parallel or interconnecting fault lines.
Unlike a single fault, a fault zone encompasses a broader area of deformation: The San Andreas fault zone extends for miles on either side of the main rupture.
Earthquakes originating in fault zones may produce shaking across a wider area.
