fan theorists
Lore-obsessed audience members
Fan theorists are enthusiasts who develop elaborate explanations, predictions, or interpretations about fictional works—connecting plot details, analyzing symbolism, or speculating about hidden meanings and future developments.
The practice thrives in online communities devoted to films, TV series, books, and video games: Fan theorists have been dissecting every frame of the trailer.
The term can be affectionate or gently mocking, depending on how plausible the theories are.
