fainting couches
Dramatic collapse seating
A fainting couch is a backless or partial-backed sofa with one raised end, designed so a person could recline at an angle.
Popular in the Victorian era, supposedly for women in tight corsets who felt faint.
Now the term often appears sarcastically to mock melodramatic reactions: Someone get him a fainting couch—he saw a typo in the memo.
