Eye gunk is the crusty or sticky residue that accumulates in the corners of the eyes, especially after sleep.
It forms from dried tears, mucus, and debris.
Also called sleep, eye boogers, or rheum (the medical term): I wiped the eye gunk away before putting in my contacts.
