extralinguistic

Outside of language

Extralinguistic refers to factors outside language itself that nonetheless affect communication.

Tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures, and social context are all extralinguistic—they convey meaning but aren't part of the words or grammar: Extralinguistic cues often tell you more than what someone actually says.
