exhuming

Digging up remains

Exhuming is digging up something that was buried, especially a corpse: They exhumed the body for a second autopsy.

The word extends to bringing forgotten things back to light: The biographer spent years exhuming obscure letters and diaries.

To exhume is to reverse interment—whether literal burial or figurative obscurity.
