estate car

British station wagon

An estate car is the British term for what Americans call a station wagon: a car with an extended rear cargo area, a rear door or hatch, and typically a roofline that continues flat to the back rather than sloping down.

The name evokes the original purpose of such vehicles, which was transporting people and luggage to and from country estates.
