ensheathing

Wrapping in layers

Ensheathing means enclosing or covering something as if with a sheath—a protective outer layer.

The term appears most often in anatomy and biology, describing tissue that wraps around nerves or other structures: ensheathing cells, the membrane ensheathing the nerve fibers.

More broadly, anything that surrounds and protects can be said to ensheath: Ice ensheathed the branches.
