emergency alert
Urgent public warning
An emergency alert is an urgent notification broadcast to warn the public of imminent danger—severe weather, natural disasters, missing children, or other threats requiring immediate action.
In the United States, the Emergency Alert System can interrupt television and radio broadcasts with distinctive warning tones: An emergency alert just came through about a tornado warning.
Phones now receive wireless emergency alerts as text messages that bypass normal notification settings.
