court summons
Mandatory appearance notice
A court summons is an official document requiring someone to appear before a court at a specified time, either as a defendant, witness, or juror.
Unlike a subpoena, which compels testimony or document production, a summons initiates legal proceedings or notifies someone of a lawsuit filed against them: She was served with a court summons for the custody hearing.
