Elvers are young eels, especially those migrating from the ocean into freshwater rivers.
At this stage they're transparent or semi-transparent, just a few inches long: Fishermen harvest elvers for the lucrative Asian market.
The term applies particularly to the European eel and American eel during their juvenile migration.
