ectoplasms

Ghostly visible substance

Ectoplasms is the plural of ectoplasm, a substance supposedly exuded by spirit mediums during séances—viscous material that purportedly allowed ghosts to manifest physically.

The concept was central to 19th-century spiritualism and largely debunked as fraud.

In fiction and video games, ectoplasm is the gooey residue left by ghosts: The ghost hunters found ectoplasms coating the walls.
