economic refugees
Fleeing financial hardship
Economic refugees are people who leave their home country to escape poverty, unemployment, or lack of opportunity rather than war or persecution.
The term is sometimes used neutrally to describe migration driven by economic desperation, but often carries dismissive connotations—implying these migrants have less legitimate claims than political refugees: Critics called them economic refugees, not true asylum seekers.
