Earwax buildup is the accumulation of cerumen—the waxy substance produced by glands in the ear canal—to the point where it causes blockage or discomfort.
The ear normally clears wax on its own, but sometimes it collects faster than it can be expelled: The doctor said my hearing loss was just earwax buildup.
Cotton swabs often worsen the problem by pushing wax deeper.
