dry stone walls
Stacked rock fences
Dry stone walls are barriers built by stacking stones without mortar, relying on careful placement and friction to hold together.
Common in rural Britain and Ireland, they mark field boundaries and contain livestock.
The technique requires skill in selecting and fitting stones: Miles of dry stone walls crisscross the Yorkshire Dales.
Also called drystack walls.
