dry-heaves

Vomiting without vomit

Dry-heaves are the spasmodic motions of vomiting without producing anything—the body goes through the convulsions of throwing up, but the stomach is empty.

They often follow actual vomiting or accompany severe nausea: She spent the morning with dry-heaves after the chemo treatment.

Also spelled as one word or two: dry heaves, dryheaves.
