double-nickel

Fifty-five miles

Double-nickel is slang for fifty-five, from the two fives in the number resembling a pair of nickels.

It most often refers to the 55 mph speed limit that was federally mandated in the United States from 1974 to 1995: I got pulled over doing seventy in a double-nickel zone.

The term gained currency in CB radio culture among truckers.
