door knock
Knuckles on wood
A door knock is the sound made by rapping knuckles or a knocker against a door to announce one's presence: I heard a door knock and went to see who it was.
The phrase can also refer to the act itself.
In sales and canvassing, door knocks are visits to residences: The campaign logged three thousand door knocks last weekend.
