pit bulls
Stocky fighting dogs
Pit bull is a term applied to several breeds of muscular, short-haired dogs with broad heads and powerful jaws, including the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier.
The dogs were originally bred for bull-baiting and later dogfighting, which contributes to their controversial reputation.
Pit bulls inspire strong opinions: advocates emphasize their loyalty and affection as family pets, while critics point to their involvement in serious dog attacks.
Many jurisdictions have enacted breed-specific legislation restricting or banning pit bull ownership.
