Dog-eared describes pages with corners folded down to mark a place, and by extension, anything worn or shabby from heavy use: a dog-eared paperback, dog-eared furniture.
The folded corner resembles a dog's floppy ear.
To dog-ear a book is to mark it this way: She dog-eared the recipe she wanted to try.
