diversity casting
Representational talent selection
Diversity casting is the practice of casting actors from underrepresented groups—racial minorities, disabled performers, LGBTQ individuals—in roles not specifically written for them, or deliberately assembling casts that reflect demographic variety.
The term is used neutrally by supporters who see it as correcting historical exclusion, and critically by those who view it as prioritizing identity over talent or fidelity to source material: Critics called the remake's diversity casting pandering, while defenders praised the fresh perspective.
