Remove corn tops
To detassel is to remove the tassels from corn plants during pollination season, preventing self-pollination so plants cross-pollinate with a desired variety.
It's tedious agricultural work, traditionally done by hand and often by teenagers: I spent every summer detasseling corn in Iowa.
The practice is essential for producing hybrid seed corn.
