designator
Thing that labels
A designator is something that designates—a name, label, code, or symbol that identifies or points to something else.
In military and aviation contexts, designators are alphanumeric codes identifying aircraft types, units, or targets: The F-16 designator indicates a fighter aircraft.
In technical and legal writing, a designator distinguishes one item from others in a set: Each part has a unique designator.
