depth measurement
How deep something is
Depth measurement is the determination of how far down something extends—the distance from a surface to the bottom of a body of water, a hole, or any cavity.
In nautical contexts, depth measurement traditionally used a weighted line (sounding); modern methods include sonar and echo sounders.
The depth measurement showed the lake was fifty feet at its deepest point.
