deportation hearing
Removal case trial
A deportation hearing is a legal proceeding where an immigration judge determines whether a non-citizen should be removed from the country.
The person facing removal can present evidence, call witnesses, and argue for relief such as asylum or cancellation of removal: She testified at her deportation hearing that returning to her country would endanger her life.
These hearings take place in immigration court, separate from the criminal justice system.
