deferred action

Action put off

Deferred action is a decision by authorities—usually immigration officials—to postpone enforcement against someone who technically violates the law.

It doesn't grant legal status but temporarily removes the threat of deportation or prosecution: She received deferred action and a work permit.

The term gained prominence through DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a U.S. policy protecting certain undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children.
