denormalization

Intentional data redundancy

Denormalization is the process of restructuring a database to include redundant data, sacrificing the elegance of normalized design for faster query performance.

In normalized databases, information lives in one place only; denormalization deliberately duplicates it across tables to reduce the computational cost of joins.

The term extends beyond databases to any system where you trade ideal structure for practical efficiency: We denormalized the API responses to cut load times.
