defensive pact
Shared security agreement
A defensive pact is an agreement between nations to protect each other if attacked by a third party.
Unlike offensive alliances, it commits signatories only to mutual defense, not to joint aggression: NATO operates as a defensive pact—an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.
The term appears in diplomacy, history, and strategy games alike.
