defensive foul
Blocking the offense
A defensive foul in basketball occurs when a player guarding the ball handler or another opponent makes illegal contact—holding, pushing, reaching in, or blocking a player who has established position.
Defensive fouls typically result in free throws or possession for the opposing team: He picked up his fourth defensive foul trying to stop the fast break.
