decompacting

Breaking up compression

Decompacting is the process of loosening or breaking up something that has been compressed.

Soil that has been packed down by heavy machinery or foot traffic may need decompacting to restore drainage and root growth: The gardener spent the afternoon decompacting the lawn with an aerator.

The term applies wherever compaction needs reversing—data files, storage containers, or materials that have settled too densely.
