decommitting

Reneging on promises

Decommitting is withdrawing a commitment previously made.

The term appears most often in college athletic recruiting, where a high school athlete who has verbally committed to one school later backs out, usually to accept an offer elsewhere: After decommitting from Ohio State, he signed with Alabama.

The word applies to any reversal of a pledge or promise.
