daymares

Conscious frightening visions

Daymares are disturbing, intrusive thoughts or vivid anxious episodes that occur while awake—the daytime equivalent of nightmares.

Unlike dreams, they happen during conscious hours, often as unwanted mental images or scenarios of things going wrong: I kept having daymares about the interview.

The term captures that nightmare quality of dread without the sleep.
